3. TRICYCLE
The
hand-powered tricycle can cover long distances and haul up
to 100kgs (220lbs.) of cargo! The tri-cycle is ideal for residents
of remote areas and for people who commute long distances
to work. Like our wheelchairs, the hand tricycle is able to
traverse potholes and mud pits with ease – an essential
capability for active lifestyles in Zambia. The hand-crank
can be set by the rider to any of 6 gears for speed and ease
of cranking. At peak speed, our customers report that they
go about as fast as bicyclists. Tricycle riders do not need
to have the arms of body builders. While our customers say
they enjoy how their arm strength has increased after using
the tricycle, they report that the tricycle has been an “amazing”
improvement to their mobility even since the first day they
got it. Read More...

BICYCLE AMBULANCE
It
is a product that is hooked to the bicycle as a trailer. The
ambulance is made with the peri-urban and rural population
in mind, who do not have a reliable, adequate and cost
effective way to be transported to a medical centre. It is
also helpful in areas where roads impassable to ambulances.
Disacare introduced the bicycle ambulance on the list of its
products in 2006. The ambulance is designed to reduce
preventable deaths in places where motorized ambulances
cannot access, including most villages. The ambulances
consist of a trailer that is attached to a bicycle. Because
they do not require money for fuel and maintenance is very
simple (simpler than bicycle maintenance), these ambulances
are ready to use at any time. Bicycle ambulances are
intended for use by rural hospitals, clinics, and village
(under the management of the village council or chief) and
home based care providers.

BASKETBALL WHEELCHAIRS
These are
designed for sports activities. The rear wheels have a bigger camber
(6˚)
than the Kavuluvulu. Camber is the way the rear wheels are tilted
when viewed from the top of the wheelchair. In this case they are
tilted in towards the body. This makes the wheelchair stable as it
has a wider base. It is easier to propel and the player can make
sharp turns without the wheelchair falling on the sides. The front
wheels are also smaller and hard as compared to the Kavuluvulu which
has wide and soft front wheels. This also makes it easy to propel as
it has less traction to the basketball concrete ground. The backrest
is made as short as possible so that it does not interfere with
upper body movements and hands propelling. The user should have good
upper body functionality without requiring support. The footrests do
not protrude in front of the wheelchair instead they are “inside” to
avoid breaking spokes of the other players’ wheelchairs in cases
collisions. It is rigid. It is made from mild steel and therefore
very durable.

MOTOR BIKE AMBULANCE
This, like a bicycle ambulance was designed with the peri-urban
and rural population in mind. It is equally a good option
for communities which have inadequate ambulance facilities,
impassable roads or do not have an ambulances at all to take
patients to medical centres. The trailer is hooked to a
motor bike. The trailer has lights and a number plate should
be acquired from the relevant authorities. Alternatively,
it can also be used as Transport for agriculture produce and
can be used as a Taxi in rural areas.
