THE KAVULUVULU
The ‘kavuluvulu’ –
meaning whirlwind in one of our local languages (Nyanja) –
is a wheelchair adapted to Zambia’s terrain. Muddy roads and
potholes are no problem for this chair! The front caster wheels
are wide and made of solid rubber (no flat tires), while the back
drive wheels use mountain bike tires (24x2.17in., or 60.7x5.5cm)
for a smooth ride anywhere. In this chair, wheelchair riders experience
maximum mobility!
The kavuluvulu’s other specific features include:
A collapsible frame that has been tested
to be 100 times stronger [right Check test report if can find it!]
than the most popular imported wheelchairs
A frame that is primed and painted for rust protection, while curved
for strength and style
Flip-up footrests for ease in standing transfers
Slightly inclined seating for even distribution of pressure under
the back and thighs.
Durable, “breathable” cloth seating for comfort and
prevention of pressure sores
Steel wheels and push rims
Handbrakes on both drive wheels
Forward positioning of rear wheels for ease in propulsion
A low centre of mass for stability
Rear push-handles for ease of assistance
Through Disacare’s assessment and fitting process, each wheelchair
can be tailored to the rider’s body, making it the most helpful
and comfortable mobility aide available. Disacare highly recommend
that users take advantage of the free assessments! Tailored components
can include:
Seat width (range 28-46cm, or 11-18
in.) – making the chair wide enough for comfort, and thin
enough for maximum manoeuvrability
Seat length/depth (range 20-46cm, or 8-18in.)
Backrest height (range 25-55cm, or 10-21.5in.), so that the rider
can feel supported while maximizing manoeuvrability.
Seat tilt, for balance and distribution of weight between back and
thighs
Footrest height, for comfort and support
Armrests if necessary, upholstered for comfort
Addition of a horizontal leg rest, in cases where a knee cannot
bend
Optional special seating cushions to prevent pressure sores
